There’s something almost comical about the fact that news agencies and TV networks and even bloggers have to keep reporting the same news, sometimes over and over, when some new development occurs, the de rigueur style being a brief recap and then the new news.
Unfortunately, that’s just the way it is in an era of unending story cycles, an administration that can’t stay out of the headlines, and a long-running investigation whose result could upend everything we know about democracy in the United States.
Honestly, I’ll take the trade-off — recaps of things I already know — so long as I get to follow the trail of corruption that will ultimately lead to Trump’s downfall.
So let’s dispense with what you already knew before today: That the NRA funneled Russian money to Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. It was huge news when it broke, and everyone SWORE they were going to remember the name Alexander Torshin, since he was the apparatchik between America’s own terrorist network of gun sellers and the Russian interests who wanted Trump in power in the United States.
The details really aren’t all that cloudy, even. Like, it’s not “suspected” that this all went down, it is a known fact. Hell, Torshin bragged about his connections to Trump through the NRA to anyone who would listen. And did we mention he was the deputy governor of Russia’s state-owned central bank? I mean, this just gets more convoluted every second — political connections, a history of working with the NRA in regards to America elections, money, “dark money” donors who don’t have to be revealed to the FEC — really, the only way this could all be sorted out is if someone with the power to integrate all of this knowledge into the ongoing investigation could just get their hands on the NRA’s tax filings.
OH. Okay, then.
The experts who told McClatchy this happen to be a former DOJ tax prosecutor, another DOJ guy, oh, and some more people from the DOJ.
This could be the greatest two-fer in the history of investigations — imagine being able to prove in open court that millions of dollars the Trump campaign got in donations were illegal and that the loudest minority in the country, the NRA, were responsible.
Carry on, Bob. I keep reading the recaps so I can get to the stuff like this.
